Course Description

This course explores the relationship between history and memory as mediated by storytelling. How are memory and history different? What is the role of narratives in constructing personal and collective histories? How do narratives blend fact and fiction in hybrid accounts of history? To answer these questions, we will read closely three novels and analyze them on three scales: the fiction’s engagement with personal and collective history, stylistic innovations in the novels, and the inner life of the consciousness and conscience.
