Using both American music and American music writing as our texts, our class will examine the rise of popular music in the American consciousness in the latter half of the 20th century and into the present day. How have music writers attempted to use American music—which has often mirrored or channeled the spirit of larger American social movements and anxieties—to investigate deeper truths about American life? We’ll read on Frank Sinatra, the Doors, A Tribe Called Quest, evangelical rock bands, Kanye West, and many more, in texts by New Journalists (Gay Talese, Tom Wolfe), curious loners (Joan Didion, John Jeremiah Sullivan), those protected by “countercultural” “institutions” like Rolling Stone (Lester Bangs, Greil Marcus), the self-interested (Meghan Daum, Hanif Abdurraqib), the socially-interested (Kiese Laymon, Ta-Nehisi Coates), and others, as we follow the wild rise of music writing.
