Course Description

The 1910s and 1920 were decades of unrest and upheavals: Social, political and economic conditions were affected by major changes and especially the First World War represented a challenge of extraordinary dimension which had a great impact on all areas of life in Great Britain.
This seminar will investigate the role of the 1910s and 1920s as well as the different forms of representation of these decades in British TV series. We will study how the series Downton Abbey, The Village and Peaky Blinders engage with the concept of history and how they shape contemporary understandings of the past. Special attention will be paid to how the First World War and its impact on pre-existing gender roles and general social circumstances are depicted.

  • Downton Abbey (2010–2015)
  • The Village (2013-2014)
  • Peaky Blinders (2013- )
