Course Description

Scott Meyers is a guest lecturer from the University of Iowa.

This course will survey the history of late twentieth and early twenty-first-century American counterculture – including beatniks, black nationalists, hippies, and hipsters – a diverse array of social, political, and aesthetic movements that in some sense subverted the norms of mainstream American society. These movements have been conceived as forms of resistance to the dominant culture, but also, somewhat paradoxically, have been swiftly assimilated into popular culture. In this course, we will explore the dialectical tension between American counterculture and popular culture. ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,’ or will it?
