Welcome to the Anthropocene: Studying Ecocritical and Posthumanist Works
- This course is CANCELLED .
The term ‘anthropocene’ was coined in 2000 by Paul Crutzen to distinguish the current geological age from the holocene.
It is argued that because of the large-scale effects that humanity is having on the environment, we are now living in a new geological era.
This course is concerned with the cultural expression of this new era. It will focus on two key theoretical approaches: ecocriticism and post- or trans-humanism. We will examine works from a variety of genres and media, from classic eco-horror cinema to contemporary cli-fi (climate fiction).
The course requirements are regular reading, a presentation, and an essay.
