Course Description

As both the 16th century and the Elizabethan Age (in 1603) drew to a close, 1599 was a year of change and a year of anticipation. Moreover, it was the year in which William Shakespeare wrote four of his most important plays: Henry V, As You Like It, Julius Caesar, and Hamlet. Most crucially in this context, the Globe Theatre, which is so intricately connected with Shakespeare’s fame, also opened that year.
Taking our cue from James Shapiro’s book 1599 – a Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, we will explore the social, cultural and political history of that year, as well as the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

PLEASE NOTE: This class will be followed by a seminar in “Kulturdidaktik” (Sedlmayr/Piskurek) about how to mediate and teach Shakespeare in the winter semester, and a field trip to Stratford-upon-Avon in February/March 2019. These are independent classes/events, but students are certainly welcome to participate in all of them.

Course Requirements
