Course Description

In his provocatively titled book What was African American Literature? (2011) Kenneth Warren argues that under the historical circumstances of segregation, the work of any individual African-American writer has been considered a matter for the “race” as a whole. However, as Warren already indicates with this title, times have changed and literary scholars identify contemporary African American literature these days as “post-racial,” “post-black,” “post-soul,” or “post-oppression” literature. In this course we will explore how texts published in recent years relate to those categorizations and the traditions of African American literature.
