Film Screening Di 16:15 - 17:45
The film scholar Linda Williams calls comedy, melodrama, horror, and pornography body genres because they evoke extreme physical and psychological reader and viewer responses. She notes that bodies of women and ‘Others’ often stand in for the emotions the audience is enticed to feel. Thus images of female, Native American, or black bodies are excessively objectified in order for readers and viewers to spontaneously react to them. In the seminar we will explore these expressive genres which expose bodies in order to make an impression on viewers in different media. We will read theories on reader response, the abject, and comedy. In addition, there will be compulsory film screening sessions on some Tuesdays starting at 4 p.m.!
