Course Description

This course will provide an overview of the life of the ex-slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and with it a survey of racial conflict in the Nineteenth-century United States. Beginning with his 1855 autobiography My Bondage and My Freedom, we will study important aspects of Douglass's career, including his work as a journalist and public speaker, his association with prominent abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison and John Brown, and his interest in the political potential of photography. In addition to his autobiography, we will read selected journalism, lectures, and essays.
