The integration of culture into language teaching programs, in an age of mass immigration, borderless communication, multilingualism, multiculturalism, and the use of English as a global lingua franca, tends now to steer clear of reductionist and ethnocentric presentations of language and culture. Instead the focus is on equipping language students with broader interactional and intercultural competences needed for communication within and across pluralistic speech communities. After brief consideration of the theoretical underpinning of the integration of culture into language programmes, a range of pertinent intercultural case-studies from contemporary and situated ethnographies of communication will elucidate the bond between language and culture, the importance of cultural awareness, the acceptance of diversity and the need to foment empowerment and identity reinforcement. A series of interactive exercises will show teachers how to integrate such elements into classroom practice. In addition to readings posted on Moodle, a list of the relevant literature will be provided at the beginning of the course.
