Course Description

Currently, the Atlantic and Pacific become more and more interconnected due to increased global transportation, migration, and political as well as cultural exchanges. Whereas Atlantic studies have been an inherent part in the academia, Pacific studies have only triggered interest in the last decades as the Pacific Rim and Asia have become increasingly economically and politically powerful and thus can be hardly ignored. This course will follow the current “Transpacific Turn” in American Studies by focusing on the relationship of the Unites States with nations located along the shores of the Pacific. We will discuss and critically engage with novels, short stories, poems, music, and movies that include perspectives from Japan, Hawai’i, and Vietnam.
