Course Description

Liberty, tolerance and progress were some of the most important ideals of the Age of the Enlightenment in Europe which was a period of profound social, political and religious change. In this seminar we will examine the impact of these revolutionary 18th-century developments on English literature. Selected texts will be used to analyse different genres such as comedy, prose and satire. This will enable us to critically assess the significance of the Age of the Enlightenment in the history of English literature. Course Requirements will be discussed in class.
