Course Description

Even though the English language has no official status in Germany in general, and in the Ruhr Valley in particular, it has a very strong presence. We find it in institutions such as at university, in schools, in business communication, in private life, but also in social life. And not only is English used in communication with native speakers of English but increasingly so also with speakers of other languages, and in everyday speech amongst speakers of German.

This seminar will trace the reasons that led to the use of English as an international language and the increasing presence in all areas of life in the Ruhr Valley. Using concepts of multilingualism and identity construction as well as a background of English as an International Language, we will collect and evaluate data on everyday use of the English language in diverse contexts such as university, school, business, advertising, linguistic landscapes and others in order to determine the status of English in the Ruhr Valley and the impact it has on languages and cultures in contact with it.

This course is conceptualized both for teacher training and applied linguistics students.
