Course Description

What is feminism? What did it mean in the past? What does it mean today? Why is ”feminist” a term so negatively connotated for so many?
In this class, we will explore a variety of feminist voices, mainly in literature, both in fictional and non-fictional works, in order to find answers to the questions above. The class will present an introduction to past and contemporary feminist thought.
Readings will include works by, inter alia, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Sylvia Plath, Carl Djerassi, Adrienne Rich, Rebecca Solnit, and Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie.
A reader will be made available at the beginning of the semester.
