Course Description
The 1920s are one of the most exciting decades in cinema history, a period rife with innovation and
discovery. Covering the years 1917 to 1930, this course looks at such silent and (very) early sound genres
as slapstick comedy, farce, high melodrama, so-called “race” films, early documentary, abstract animation,
city symphony, surrealism, and adventure. The course looks positively at the explosion of creativity in this
period, but it will not turn a blind eye to the systemic iniquities of the era—such as the industries’ limited role
for women, and the films’ often nakedly racist depiction of non-white and non-Western peoples.
