Course Description

“Mr Quartermain, you do not know me or my history very well. More to the point, you do not have the first idea about my dreams. Dreams that were merely bad, sir, would be a great relief to me.” (Miss Wilhelmina Murray)

At the end of the nineteenth century, the British Empire is so large that it is said that the sun never sets on it. Nontheless, dark shadows start to manifest that threaten this imperial dream – both externally and internally. Therefore, a band of (fictitious) protectors is assembled – the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

In this course, we will consider the first volume of the graphic novel series by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill and bring together real events and fictitious accounts. The pride of the British people at the height of their Empire and the fears of reverse colonialization that the source novels Moore and O’Neill employ to create their League, testify to the social and literary atmosphere around 1900.

Using methods of close reading and applying various theories to the texts, students will gain a better understanding of a (literary) period that has created some of the most memorable monsters.
