|Intercultural Communicative Competence in the English Classroom - Blockseminar - NEW COURSE||2 PS/HS||
According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the Educational Standards (Bildungsstandards) of the Kultusministerkonferenz developing learners’ intercultural communicative competence is seen as one of the main objectives for the English classroom. The (ambitious) aim is to enable students to manage interculturally shaped interactions as successfully as possible by acting and reacting in situationally appropriate ways. For this to happen, they need to be interested in other cultures in the first place, have the willingness to get in touch with speakers from different linguacultural backgrounds, as well as, most importantly, be able to reflect on their own culturally conditioned positions and to adapt and change their own perspectives.
This course first starts with a theoretical overview of relevant concepts and models. It will then focus on how intercultural communicative competence can be taught and developed in the language classroom through a range of various methodological approaches including elements from drama education. Building on these ideas, students will develop lesson plans and in-class presentations.
