Course Description

This seminar will deal with a series of early speeches by America's most important 19th century essayist and cultural critic. They are not very well known and provide insight into both the development of the author as well as the development of a transatlantic cultural dialogue under the new paradigm of World Literature. Emerson’s biographical lectures on Michelangelo, Martin Luther, John Milton, George Fox and Edmund Burke will provide us with a fascinating American introduction to Europe’s early modernity and to what Emerson saw as American-style pioneers in Europe anticipating New World developments.

Reading List

A Reader with all texts will be provided.
