Course Description

What is a “task” as used in the foreign language classroom? The term is often used in the study of foreign language teaching but it may not always be understood or used with its original intention. This course will review Fachdidaktik literature in order to define a pedagogical task, understand TBLL’s theoretical, philosophical, and historical foundations, and finally to apply this understanding to create “task-based” or “task-supported” lessons and units. Some key questions explored in this course include:

  • What is the difference between task-based and task-supported language learning and teaching?
  • What teaching goals including various competences can be achieved through tasks?
  • What role does grammar acquisition or language form have within a meaning-focused task?
  • How can teachers adapt textbook exercises and activities in order to create tasks?
  • How can teachers create tasks that support authentic or real-world language needs?

Reading List

In addition to course readings posted on Moodle, students taking this course will be required to purchase the book Teaching English: Task-Supported Language Learning from Müller-Hartmann and Schocker-von Ditfurth.
