Course Description

This seminar investigates the significance of the bible for American culture. The bible is a central text in the development of the American colonies and the U.S. for both the dominant and the marginal cultures. The seminar investigates the various cultural uses of the bible from the Puritan beginnings to the “televangelists” of our days. Using a web-based text of the bible, students will investigate biblical references in the texts studied, contextualize them and investigate their cultural effectiveness. Texts will be provided at the beginning of the semester. A very basic knowledge of the bible is helpful, though not required. A good preparation for the class would include the first two books, Genesis and Exodus, ideally in the King James version although a German version will also do. Please note that this is not a seminar in theology but in American cultural history. However, students of religion are most welcome.

This course is particularly recommended for students of the Angewandte Studiengänge
