Course Description

This course will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in Linguistics I. We will start out from a detailed description of the acoustic qualities of speech sounds, i.e. articulatory and acoustic phonetics. We will then move on to the classification of sounds and distinctive feature analysis. The course will close with a look at suprasegmental phonology, thus at prosody and the syllable, its structure, organizing principles and constraints. A strong focus will be placed on practical work like the computerized analysis of speech sounds. Students are advised to obtain the book A Course in Phonetics by Peter Ladefoged and Keith Johnson, which we are going to use quite a bit. Additional reading material and requirements for credits will be announced in the first meeting. This course is conceptualized both for teacher training and applied linguistics students.
