Course Description

This class investigates the theories of second language acquisition and learning and their relevance for EFL teaching and learning. We will have a close look at several concepts of stages of development so as to find out if and in which way teaching has to follow the course of second language acquisition. In this context, we will focus both on theories that are based on innate concepts and on the idea of teachability and learnability. We will also examine the concept of language aptitude and research on learners and their different learning styles. Further topics may be covered if of interest to the participants. In addition, student projects may investigate the role of errors and their possible causes, or the exposure of learners to varieties, be they mainstream, ESL or EFL. Here the concept of what constitutes a standard, and what its role is, may be investigated. Course readings and course requirements will be discussed in the first class.
