Although Donald Trump and the Trump presidency have been called and continue to be referred to as “unprecedented,” much of their style, ideology and narrative is indeed familiar in American political culture. This seminar will attempt to understand the current presidency both as unique and as following the traditions of American (political) culture. Given a situation that is very much in flux, the exact seminar topics will be decided before the class starts. We will definitely deal with some historical antecedents, especially the presidency of Andrew Jackson (1829-37), Trump’s forays into popular culture (both print and TV), the presidential campaign, and his first months as president. A reader will be made available. At this point, group A and B will be identical in content. Group A will also focus on application in the Lehramt, although students from other pograms are welcome.
